How long does an RSA last?

The hospitality industry in Australia is vibrant, rewarding, and often demanding. Whether you’re shaking up cocktails, serving fine wines, or operating a small pub, the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification is essential to ensure the safety of both your patrons and your business.

But how long does an RSA last? This guide answers the question while walking you through the intricacies of RSA certification for each Australian state and territory.

What is an RSA?

The RSA is a mandatory training program for individuals working in roles where they serve or supply alcohol. Its primary purpose is to promote responsible alcohol practices, reduce harm caused by excessive alcohol consumption, and ensure safe operations within hospitality establishments.

RSA training covers essential topics, including:

  • Recognising signs of intoxication.
  • Understanding legal requirements for serving alcohol.
  • Handling difficult situations, such as refusing service.
  • Strategies to minimise alcohol-related harm.

Successful completion of the training equips hospitality workers with the knowledge and skills to responsibly handle situations involving alcohol sale and consumption.

Who needs an RSA?

If you’re working or planning to work in hospitality, there’s a high chance you’ll need to have a valid RSA certificate. Here’s a quick overview of who typically requires one:

  • Bartenders: Individuals mixing and serving drinks directly to customers.
  • Waitstaff: Workers serving alcohol on tables in restaurants, cafés, or bars.
  • Retail liquor staff: Employees selling alcohol from bottle shops or supermarkets.
  • Licensees and managers: Those overseeing licensed establishments.
  • Security personnel: Those monitoring the entrance or patrolling in establishments that sell or supply alcohol.
  • Event staff: Temporary staff serving alcohol at pop-up events, weddings, or festivals.

Essentially, if your job involves serving or supplying alcohol in any way, having an RSA isn’t just helpful—it’s a legal requirement.

Does an RSA have an expiry date?

The duration and validity of an RSA are determined by the laws in each Australian state and territory. While some regions have lifelong certificates, others require periodic renewals or refresher courses. If you obtained your RSA a number of years ago, or have been out of the industry for a while, it’s worth checking with your state body to ensure your certificate is still valid. Below is a state-by-state guide to help you understand what’s required in your area.

How long does an RSA last QLD?

The RSA in Queensland does not expire. Once completed, the certification is valid indefinitely. However, some employers may request periodic refresher training to ensure staff stay updated with changing legislation or best practices. All RSA training in QLD must be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) approved by the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR).

How long does an RSA last WA?

Similar to Queensland, an RSA certificate in Western Australia remains valid indefinitely once obtained. While there’s no mandated refresher course, participation in the industry ensures you remain compliant. Those transferring certifications from other states may be required to confirm compliance with WA-specific liquor laws.

How long does an RSA last VIC?

RSAs in Victoria are valid for three years. After this period, you’ll need to complete a refresher course via the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) to maintain your accreditation. The state’s training focuses on the responsible distribution and serving of alcohol, under specific guidelines for Victorian legislation.

How long does an RSA last NSW?

New South Wales operates slightly differently to other states. An RSA in NSW is initially valid for five years. Afterward, you are required to renew it, which can be done online through the Service NSW portal. The renewal process involves a short online test to refresh your knowledge of responsible service practices and ensure you are up-to-date with current legislation.

How long does an RSA last SA?

South Australia doesn’t impose any expiration date on RSA certificates. This means your certification is valid for life. However, continuous learning is encouraged, as the regulatory landscape may evolve.

How long does an RSA last TAS?

RSA certifications in Tasmania are valid for life, much like in other states that don’t require certificate revalidation. That said, it can be a good idea to take a refresher course every few years to stay sharp and updated on any legislative changes.

How long does an RSA last NT?

Much like Victoria, the Northern Territory RSA is valid for three years. After this time, you will need to undertake a refresher course to renew your certificate and have it be valid for use. The refresher course can be completed online through NTrefreshRSA, making it convenient and accessible for individuals.

How long does an RSA last ACT?

Australian Capital Territory RSAs are also valid for three years. After this time, you will need to successfully complete a refresher course in order to continue working within relevant roles.

Why understanding RSA validity is essential for hospitality workers

Knowing how long your RSA lasts is not just about fulfilling a legal requirement—it demonstrates professionalism and commitment to creating a safe, welcoming environment for patrons. Misinformation or expired certificates can lead to fines, penalties, or even the loss of employment.

Here are some tips to stay on top of your RSA compliance across states:

  • Keep a digital and physical copy of your RSA certificate for ease of access. By keeping a copy of your RSA on your phone, you can easily check to see when you obtained it.
  • Set a reminder in your phone for a month before the date your RSA will expire (if you’re in a state where the certificate does not remain valid indefinitely).
  • Check with your employer about specific requirements for your workplace or role. Some employers may prefer regular refresher courses, even in states where RSAs are valid indefinitely.
  • If you move interstate, ensure your RSA complies with local regulations. Many states recognise certificates from others—but if they don’t, you’ll need to undertake new training.
