How long does an RSG last?

Those looking to work in Australia’s booming hospitality or gaming industries likely have heard about the need for an RSG (Responsible Service of Gambling) certificate. But how long does an RSG last, and why is it essential to keep yours valid? Whether you’re new to the industry or refreshing your qualifications, this guide will explain everything you need to know about RSG certification in Australia. From state-specific requirements to steps for obtaining one, we’ve got you covered.

What is an RSG?

An RSG, or Responsible Service of Gambling, is a mandatory certification for anyone working in venues that provide gambling services. This can include casinos, pubs, clubs, or any establishment with gaming machines or betting facilities. The certificate demonstrates your ability to responsibly and ethically manage gambling activities. It’s designed to ensure the holder understands the importance of compliance with state laws and how to offer protection for patrons vulnerable to gambling-related harm.

Employers in the gaming industry often require their staff to have an RSG certificate as a condition of employment. This is because hospitality workers are responsible for safeguarding their patrons’ wellbeing while upholding legal obligations, such as identifying problem gambling behaviors and following self-exclusion protocols.

Who needs an RSG?

You’ll need an RSG certificate if you work in roles such as:

  • Bar staff in pubs or clubs with gaming machines
  • Casino attendants or dealers
  • Staff running TAB facilities
  • Gaming supervisors or managers
  • Hospitality staff engaged in any aspect of gambling services

Even if you’re not directly involved in gambling-related activities, some states require all hospitality staff in venues with gaming facilities to complete this certification. Check with your state’s gaming authority to determine the specific regulations in your area.

How long does an RSG last in Australia?

The lifespan of an RSG certificate varies depending on which state or territory you live and work in. As gambling laws differ across jurisdictions, so do the requirements for maintaining a valid RSG.

Here’s a breakdown of how long your RSG is valid in each Australian state/territory:

RSG NSW

The NSW competency card for your RSG certification expires five years from your obtainment date. At this point, you will be required to complete an online refresher course on the NSW Government’s Liquor & Gaming website in order to continue working within the industry.

RSG VIC

RSG courses in Victoria need to be refreshed every three years to remain valid. The refresher process involves completing two modules with the Department of Justice and Community Safety Victoria, one online and one face-to-face.

RSG QLD

Once you complete your RSG in Queensland, it is valid indefinitely. However, employers may request that staff refresh their knowledge periodically to stay current with any legislative changes.

RSG SA

RSG certifications in South Australia have no explicit expiry date. Some employers may still ask their employees to periodically update their training, depending on company policies and preferences.

RSG WA

Western Australia doesn’t impose an official expiry on RSG certificates. Nevertheless, workers are encouraged to remain updated with any regulatory changes in the gambling industry.

RSG NT

An RSG certificate in the Northern Territory is valid for three years from completion date. After this point, you will be required to complete an RSG refresher course.

RSG ACT

RSG certificates in the ACT must be renewed every three years. After three years, workers will need to complete a refresher course to ensure familiarity with current regulations and policies.

RSG TAS

The Tasmanian RSG certificate does not expire, but it can be a good idea for employees to update their training periodically to stay informed about industry changes.

How can you obtain an RSG?

Obtaining an RSG is straightforward and can be done either online or in a classroom-based course, depending on the provider and state requirements. For Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory, you can complete an RSG course online with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as Express Online Training.

The steps for completing an RSG online are as follows:

Step 1: Choose an approved training provider

Make sure you select a training organisation that’s accredited by your state’s regulatory body. This ensures your certification is legitimate and recognised. Compare different providers to find one that suits your needs and budget.

Step 2: Enrol in the course

Once you’ve chosen an approved provider, you can enrol in their online RSG course. You’ll need to provide some personal information, such as your full name, contact details, and potentially ID documents.

Step 3: Complete the course modules

The online RSG course is broken down into different modules that cover topics like responsible gambling practices, problem gambling, and laws and regulations. With Express Online Training, you can complete the modules at your own pace, pausing and resuming the course as needed, but you must finish them all to obtain your certification.

Step 4: Pass the assessment

After completing all course modules, you’ll likely be required to take an assessment to test your knowledge and understanding of responsible gambling practices. This may include multiple-choice questions or scenario-based activities.

Step 5: Receive your certification

Once you’ve successfully completed the assessment, you’ll be issued with a certificate of completion or statement of attainment. This document serves as proof that you have completed an approved RSG course and are now certified to work in the gambling industry.

Step 6: Register (if required)

Some states (like NSW) may require you to register your certification with the relevant regulatory bodies. Check with your state’s gambling authority to see if this step is necessary for you.

Why is holding a valid RSG important?

Holding an RSG certificate isn’t just about ticking a box for compliance. Here’s why maintaining a valid and up-to-date RSG is important:

Legal compliance

Gambling and gaming are heavily regulated industries in Australia. Working without a valid RSG could lead to fines for both you and your employer. Additionally, some states may even require you to hold an RSG as a condition of employment in the gambling industry.

Protect patrons and promote ethical gambling

Your training should equip you to be able to recognise problem gambling behaviour and take appropriate action to protect vulnerable patrons. This is essential in fostering a safe and responsible gambling environment. Responsible gambling practices are not only important for the wellbeing of patrons, but also for maintaining the integrity and sustainability of the industry.

Employment opportunities

It makes sense that employers would often favour job candidates who are up-to-date with their RSG certification. An active certificate demonstrates you’re serious about your role and prepared to meet industry expectations. Not only does it increase your employability, but it could also lead to better job opportunities and career advancement.

Stay current with laws and trends

Renewing your RSG (when required) keeps you informed about changing laws and best practices, establishing you as a knowledgeable professional in the field. It also provides an opportunity to brush up on your skills and stay updated with new trends, technologies and strategies in the industry.

Personal development

Completing RSG training is a great way to expand your knowledge and skillset. This not only benefits your career in the gambling industry, but it also prepares you for a range of potential job opportunities in other industries that may require responsible service practices.

Obtaining and renewing your RSG is an essential step for anyone looking to thrive in Australia’s vibrant hospitality and gambling industries. The validity of your RSG depends largely on your state or territory, so make sure you’re aware of the specific requirements where you plan to work.
