How to get a building apprenticeship

A building and construction apprenticeship can open the door to many exciting and fulfilling career paths. When you’re just starting out in the industry, the task of getting a building apprenticeship can seem a little daunting.

Today we’ll take a look at the steps you’ll need to undertake in order to start a building apprenticeship.

What is a building apprenticeship?

A building apprenticeship is a form of on-the-job training in the field of construction. As an apprentice, you’ll develop basic construction skills under the guidance of a qualified tradesperson or contractor.

Apprenticeships typically last from three to four years and include both theoretical work and practical experience.

Find someone to work with

The first step in getting a building apprenticeship is to figure out who you can work with. This could be a contractor, builder, or tradesperson. Make sure to research potential apprenticeship providers before signing any agreements.

Building apprenticeships are often unadvertised, so you may have to call around to different construction companies and ask if they have any available positions.

Obtain your qualifications

The next step after you’ve found someone to work with is to obtain the relevant qualifications to do so. You will likely be required to hold a valid white card before beginning work on a construction site.

Express Online Training provides online white card courses for many Australian states and territories. These online courses can be completed from the comfort of your own home, using a computer or smartphone. As a Registered Training Organisation, we provide local support, 7 days a week.

Some places may also require you to complete a Certificate II in Building and Construction pre-apprenticeship, or other relevant training course before beginning your apprenticeship. Check with your tradesperson to find out what they require you to have before you begin your building apprenticeship with them.

Begin your building apprenticeship

Once you have obtained the necessary qualifications, you can then begin your building apprenticeship. This will involve learning from a more experienced tradesperson and developing your skills over time. Your experience may range from working on residential homes to commercial projects, and you’ll likely specialise in a particular field.

Your apprenticeship will also include classroom-based learning that gives you a good foundation of theory behind the practical skills you’ll be learning.

You may also be required to travel from one job site to another, so it’s important to make sure you have reliable transport available.

Remember to take advantage of all the support and resources available to you during your apprenticeship. This could include mentorships from more experienced tradespeople and access to online learning resources.

Once you’ve completed your apprenticeship, you’ll be one step closer to achieving your career goals in the construction industry.

How long is a building apprenticeship?

A building apprenticeship will generally take between three and four years to complete. During this time, you’ll gain a variety of skills to equip you to enter the workforce as a qualified tradesperson. Your apprenticeship will be made up of both practical hands-on experience, as well as theoretical learning. You may also be required to complete additional courses or examinations in order to become fully qualified. Be sure to discuss the length of your apprenticeship with your employer before you begin. This will help you to better understand the expectations of the program and allow you to better plan your career.

How much do building apprentices get paid?

The amount a building apprentice is paid will depend on their level of experience and the state or territory they are employed in. It can also depend on their age and the specific industry they’re working within. In Australia, apprenticeship wages are governed by the National Training Wage Award System. To find out more information about apprentice wages and conditions in your state or territory, contact the Australian Workplace Authority.

What type of building and construction apprenticeships are available?

Apprenticeships are available for all types of building trades. This can include carpentry, bricklaying, glazing, and more. You can also specialise in a particular area such as commercial, residential, or industrial construction. Depending on the type of trade you pursue, you may also need to obtain a licence or other certification before starting your career.
