What is a USI number?

If you’re a student in Australia, you’ve probably heard about the USI. But what is a USI number and why is it important? This guide breaks down everything you need to know about the Unique Student Identifier (USI), including what it is and how to find it.

By the end of this article, you’ll have a clear understanding of how the USI works, why you need one, and how to manage it.

What is a USI number?

A USI, or Unique Student Identifier, is an individual reference number made up of letters and numbers. It is assigned to anyone undertaking nationally recognised training, such as vocational education and training or higher education courses in Australia. You’ll receive one USI that will remain valid for life. A USI is compulsory for all students studying in Australia.

Why is the USI important?

The USI acts as an education tracking system. It creates a digital record of your nationally recognised training and qualifications. Here’s why it matters:

  • Required for Commonwealth financial assistance –  To receive Commonwealth financial assistance for your studies, such as HECS-HELP, you’ll need a USI.
  • Required to finalise enrolment –  You won’t be able to finalise your enrolment in a higher education course (including courses provided by Registered Training Organisation (RTOs) without providing a USI.
  • Required for certification – If you don’t have a USI, you cannot receive your qualification or statement of attainment from your course provider upon successful completion of your course.
  • Provides an online record of your study/training – Your USI number keeps an online record of any study or training you complete in Australia.

Who needs a USI?

You’ll need to register for a USI if you are an Australia/New Zealand citizen, or an international student pursuing higher education studies in Australia. This also applies to anyone studying short courses through RTOs, including white cards and RSAs.

How do I register for a USI?

If you don’t already have a USI, you’ll need to create one before undertaking any course. You can create your USI online at the USI website. You’ll need to provide personal information such as your name, date of birth and contact details. It’s important to ensure that all details provided are accurate, as this will be used for verification purposes. The registration process is quick and simple. Follow these steps to register a USI number.

Step 1: Gather your ID documents

To create a USI, you’ll need one form of valid identification. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Australian driver’s license
  • Medicare card
  • Passport (Australian or international)
  • Birth certificate
  • Centrelink concession card
  • ImmiCard
  • Citizenship certificate

Step 2: Visit the USI website

Head to the official USI website.

Step 3: Create your USI

Select “Create a USI”, then “Get your USI”. Enter your personal information as listed on your ID., including name, birthdate, country of birth, and more. Once completed, your USI will be generated.

Tip:

Write your USI down and save it somewhere safe. You’ll need it throughout your education journey.

How to find my USI number?

You’ve got your USI—but what if you forget it? Thankfully, there are a few ways for you to do a USI number lookup, allowing you to easily find your USI number. Here are three options:

Option 1: Search for your USI using the USI website

  • Go to the USI website.
  • Select “Find your USI”
  • Choose from one of the four ways to find your USI (email address, mobile number, personal details and security/check questions, or personal details and an ID document).

Option 2: Contact your training provider

Your training organisations may be able to assist in retrieving your lost or forgotten USI number. Simply ask them if they can help. If they agree, they’ll likely require your basic identification details to proceed.

Option 3: Use your linked email address

If you created your USI number on the official website, chances are you received an email confirmation when it was first set up. Search your email inbox for terms like “USI” or “Unique Student Identifier” to find the details.

It’s important to note that having multiple USIs is not allowed. Make sure to reclaim your existing number instead of registering for a new one.

Can your USI expire?

Good news: your USI doesn’t expire! Think of your USI number as a lifelong identifier assigned to you. Once created, it remains valid throughout your education and professional life. Whether you complete additional training or pursue higher education a decade later, you’ll use the same USI. This is why it’s important to know what your USI number is, or at least, how to find it when you need to.

Can you update your USI details?

If your personal details, such as your name or contact information, change, you can update your USI record by logging into your USI account on the official USI website. To update your USI number details, go to the update your details section of the official USI website. Keeping your details accurate ensures there are no discrepancies when accessing your training history.
