What is a Food Safety Supervisor?

Under the new national standards, every business that handles potentially hazardous items (requiring refrigerated storage) to produce/sell ready-to-eat food must appoint at least one Food Safety Supervisor.

Food Safety Supervisors are responsible for the following:

  • Identifying, prevent and fix food safety problems
  • Sharing their skills and knowledge with food handlers and promote positive food safety practices in the food business
  • Supervising food handlers engaging in handling unpackaged PHF and ensures that the correct safe food handling practices are used
  • Making sure steps are taken to manage food safety risks

Each Food Safety Supervisor must complete a Food Safety Course with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and hold the "SITSS00069 - Food Safety Supervision Skill Set" which includes both "SITXFSA005 - Use hygienic practices for food safety" AND "SITXFSA006 - Participate in safe food handling practices".

Food Handler VS Food Safety Supervisor

Any person who handles food under the new Australian Food Safety Standards must complete a Food Handler Course or otherwise demonstrate skills and knowledge in food safety and hygiene relevant to their food handling activities.

The Food Handler Online Course is a basic course designed to meet these standards, whereas the Food Safety Supervisor Online Course is a fully accredited skill set which is only required to be completed by Food Safety Supervisors.
